Itinerary 

Day 1: Chiengkhong (Thailand) – Viengphoukha (Laos)

Cross the border from Thailand to Laos, after immigration formalities in Laos, transfer from border 30 km, the rest of 90 km we ride through the hill tribe villages of Kamu and Lolandders. Lunch in the shade under trees by the road wherever we feel hungry. Lunch is prepared by our guide and helpers. We arrive at the small town of Viengphoukha in the late afternoon.

Day 2: ViengPhouKha – LuangNamTha

We have breakfast at local restaurant. Our guide will help the restaurant prepare for the group. The riding distance today is only 51 km, on an undulating road, not as difficult as day 1. We also ride through hill tribe villages with a lot of children running out from their houses, greeting us  “SABAIDEE” in Lao language (“HELLO!) We arrive and have lunch in LuangNamTha at noon.

biketour15Day 3: Luangnamtha – Muangsing – Luangnamtha

Ride from guesthouse to a small town of Muangsing, close to the Chinese border. Today’s ride will take us through the most jungle covered mountains anywhere on the route, the road crosses two valleys LuangNamTha and Muangsing, so there will be some climbing, lunch in a restaurant, hill tribe village, and a drive back to LuangNamTha, where we will stay overnight at a boat landing guesthouse.

Day 4: Luangnamtha – Udomxai

Transfer the first 43 km from the guesthouse to the junction to China, ride 84 km to Udomxai. Today we ride through the villages of Thai Lu, Kmue, and Hmong ethnic groups. The variety of these groups throughout the hills of the north of the country is a highlight of this trip. Lunch is prepared by our guide and helpers. We will eat when we feel hungry and will have lunch by the road under a tree. We arrive Udomxai in late afternoon.

Day 5: Udomxai – Muangkhua

After breakfast, we head west toward the Vietnam border. Though the route is a gradual descent it ascends in some places. It is not too steep however. There are some excellent photo opportunities of the friendly Khmu tribe and their families. Lunch is prepared by our guide and helpers. We will find a nice spot for lunch stop by a stream. Today is a great day of riding.

Ride from Udomxai to MuangKhua, stay overnight at Xernaly Hotel.

Day 6: Muangkua – Pakmong

After breakfast we get on the long tail boat on Nam Ou River. The boat journey takes us down one of the most beautiful River stretches in Laos. The lime stone mountains become steeper the further south we go. The amazing landscape is quiet and relaxing. After 4 hours we arrive Muang Ngoi village. Muang Ngoi Village was the capital district of LuangPrabang province controlled by communists before 1975 during the Indochina War. We lunch at a restaurant. After lunch we continue another an hour to Nongkiaw. We start riding from Nongkiaw. After 30 km we reach the junction of Pakmong village, where we stay overnight at a guesthouse.

Day 7: Pakmong – LuangPrabang

After breakfast we turn right at the junction and again ride along Route 13 north head to LuangPrabang. Today is the longest day, the road ascends and descends but it is not as long as day 6. At kilometer 30 to LuangPrabang we turn from road 13 to a dirt road toward the Mekong River at Pak Ou village and visit Buddha caves. Riding is optional for the last 30 km to LuangPrabang.

Day 8: LuangPrabang 
Day free in Luang Prabang.

Day 9: Luang Prabang 
After breakfast, cycling outside of the city to the Kuang Si Waterfalls (28 kms/18 miles) or quieter roads looping through the countryside, by preference.

After leisurely hike up to and swimming in the falls, continued biking in the scenic rural areas nearby passing through several villages and pausing to visit a local family and school as well as cottage industries until mid-afternoon. Return to Luang Prabang by van to freshen up before sunset cruise on the Mekong, enjoying drinks on board before dinner in town.

Day 10: LuangPrabang to Bangkok 
After leisurely breakfast, transit to airport for one-hour flight to Bangkok. After arrival, transit by own taxi to riverfront hotel. Balance of day free in Bangkok or fly back to your country.

 Packing instruction: When packing you should understand that your main luggage would not be accessible during the day so if you have items you want to use please put them in a smaller “day pack “which we will store in the van. This applies to every day.

SUPPORTED TEAM

We will be supported by air conditioned mini bus and truck that have been specially modified for cycle tours. The vehicles follow us the whole time and are always available for tired cyclists. It is very easy to get bikes on and off the truck, so you can rest when you are tired and cycle whenever you fell like it, and you will be well looked after, all support vehicles will follow around 100 – 150 m behind the last cyclist, water stop is every 1 – 1:30 h or every 15 – 25 km depending on the road condition and the cyclists.

BIKE REPAIRS: 

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicles such as alum key set, chain splitter, puncture repair kit, pumper, in case of any problem you just stop. Though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. If bringing your own bike please make sure that it is fully serviced prior to the trip to ensure that nothing serious is about to break.

WEATHER: There are two seasons in Laos: from March to September is hot and raining with temperatures between 25–40 C. From October to February is winter with the temperatures between 10-25 C, it also depends on which part of the country, northern part is cooler than southern part. In winter season is the best time to travel in Laos and riding conditions are perfect.

VISA: Visa can be obtained from Lao embassies and consulates abroad; in addition, visa can be obtained on arrival at international checkpoints and the cost for this is from 30 – 42 US$ in cash with a validity of 30 days(the cost of visa is different from every nationality )  and you will also need two passport photographs.

FOOD: Meals are included as per the itinerary where B= breakfast, L = lunch, D= dinner. Most meals are Lao food and it is very similar to Thai food. Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.

After breakfast, cycling outside of the city to the Kuang Si Waterfalls (28 kms/18 miles) or quieter roads looping through the countryside, by preference.
After leisurely hike up to and swimming in the falls, continued biking in the scenic rural areas nearby passing through several villages and pausing to visit a local family and school as well as cottage industries until mid-afternoon.
Return to Luang Prabang by van to freshen up before sunset cruise on the Mekong, enjoying drinks on board before dinner in town.
